Former senior editor will now set the magazine’s editorial agenda

Toronto, ON: Today, Law and Style Media Inc., the publisher of Precedent Magazine and the Precedent A-List, announced that senior editor Daniel Fish has been promoted to editor-in-chief. Fish replaces Melissa Kluger, who has held the position of editor-in-chief since she founded both the magazine and the company in 2007. Kluger will continue in her roles as the CEO and publisher of Law and Style Media, focusing on the growth and development of the 16-year-old company.

Fish brings a strong editorial background and 10 years of experience at Precedent—most recently, as senior editor—to his new position as editor-in-chief. During Fish’s tenure at the magazine, his work has been recognized within the legal community and beyond. He’s collaborated closely with contributors on major projects, including an award-winning investigation into harassment and abuse in the articling system. His strength as a feature writer has also resulted in industry recognition at the highest level. Fish won National Magazine awards for his profile of former attorney general Michael Bryant and for his in-depth look at the prevalence of mental illness in the legal profession. Fish holds a bachelor of journalism from Carleton University and a masters in English from the University of Guelph.

“I am thrilled to be passing the editorial torch on to Daniel,” says Kluger. “Daniel is passionate about telling good stories. He works hard to create thoughtful, well-researched and enjoyable content for our lawyer audience. He has a curiosity about the legal profession that informs his work, and he shares Precedent’s interest in pushing the envelope on the issues that matter.”

For Fish, the promotion is an opportunity to create unique journalism for a highly engaged, niche audience. “At Precedent, we tell stories that no one else is telling and ask the questions no one else is asking,” says Fish. “And we do that while offering an engaging mix of lifestyle content, too. That won’t change. As editor-in-chief, I’ll also continue to connect with members of the legal community to learn what matters most to our audience.”

Despite the challenges in the media industry, Precedent continues to invest heavily in both its print and digital content. The magazine is proud to create high-quality, local journalism for the legal community. “We remain committed to doing this important work,” says Kluger. “With Daniel at the helm, I am confident that Precedent will continue to be a magazine that matters deeply to lawyers, both in print and online.”
