The 2023 Canadian General Counsel Awards

Lawyers from all over Canada arrived in Toronto to celebrate the profession’s most respected in-house counsel

Earlier this month, around 500 people gathered at the Fairmont Royal York to pay tribute to the accomplishments of the Canadian in-house counsel community.

Presented by ZSA Legal Recruitment and the National Post, the latest edition of the Canadian General Counsel Awards recognized lawyers and legal departments in 10 categories, including diversity, innovation and litigation management. Among the honourees were Gordon Currie, the executive vice-president and chief legal counsel at George Weston Limited, who was awarded the BLG Stephen Sigurdson Lifetime Achievement Award. Marisa Wyse, the chief legal and regulatory officer at Rogers Communications, won the General Counsel of the Year Award.

Lawyers across Canada mingled and networked in a reception area that featured a cascading water fountain, a nod to the evening’s theme of “fluidity.” Attendees also enjoyed a three-course meal and entertainment from both a violinist and live band. The MC of the ceremony was Peter Henein, a partner at Henein Hutchinson Robitaille LLP and a seasoned comedian.

“It was a pleasure to connect with such a diverse and talented group of lawyers,” says Christopher Sweeney, CEO of ZSA Legal Recruitment. “We look forward to seeing you again next year!”
