A gay Muslim lawyer sits down to dinner

Good conversation, food and questionable anecdotes ensued

photo by Gunnar GrimnesThe latest edition of “Fed,” the dinner-and-conversation column in the Toronto Star by Corey Mintz, features gay Muslim lawyer El-Farouk Khaki. The refugee and immigration lawyer proves to be a most entertaining dinner guest, offering Mintz a number of eyebrow-raising anecdotes, including:

  • that, at the airport, he’d rather be discriminated against for being gay than being Muslim;
  • his belief in the essential function immigration plays in the continuing strength of Canada’s economy;
  • that his immigration clients sometimes arrive in Canada unaware that they’ve been victimized by a scam artist in their home countries; and
  • his fondness for authentic pho, as opposed to “faux pho.”

Read about Mintz’s meal and chat with Khaki (and his partner and office manager, Troy Jackson), here.

Mintz tucked in with some lawyers last summer, too — including our own food columnist, Sara Chan. Click here to read that edition of “Fed.”
