Watch out closet theatre buffs — your legal worlds and your theatre geek world are about to collide for the third year in a row, because the Lawyer Show is back again, this time performing William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.
The show, happening next month, is presented by the Nightwood Theatre, Canada’s national women’s theatre, which was founded in 1979 and has launched the careers of countless Canadian theatre actors. The Lawyer Show will see a cast of 35 bona fide lawyers shed their suits and ties for three nights of Shakespearean comedy, and hopefully some spot-on British accents. The Lawyer Show is directed by Christine Brubaker, Kelly Thornton and Michelle Alexander.
For those who skipped out on tenth grade English lit, or who just need a reminder, Much Ado About Nothing is about two pairs of lovers involved in a comedy of errors where the cynical betrothed are tricked into professing their undying love for each other, and the sickly sweet pair end up calling the whole thing off — and someone has to set it all right again.
The Lawyer Show will raise some much-needed money for the Nightwood Theatre, so that it can continue mentoring young actresses and promoting women’s place on the local, national and international stages.
There will be four performances of Much Ado About Nothing: Evening showings on June 7, 8 and 9, and a matinee on June 9. Tickets are $55 and include a partial tax receipt (call 416 944 1740 x 5 to get one) and the whole show is going down at the Berkeley Street Theatre at 26 Berkeley Street in Toronto.
