The Canadian media conglomerate just got bigger

photo by Clare BellThomson Reuters announced earlier this week that it had acquired Canada Law Book from the Cartwright Group, owners of CLB Media — publisher of magazines including Canadian Lawyer and Law Times. Yesterday, in a post on his blog, magazine industry consultant D.B. Scott reported that there was no official word on how CLB Media will be impacted by the sale.

Canada Law Book publishes resources including the Dominion Law Reports, Martin’s Annual Criminal CodeLabour Spectrum and Criminal Spectrum. The company, founded as Upper Canada Law Journal in 1855, will become part of Thomson Reuters–owned Carswell — the Toronto-based business that also runs Lexpert.

A detailed analysis by Gary P. Rodrigues posted on Slaw Tuesday morning assesses how well-equipped Carswell is to meet challenges from “small but nimble legal publishers.”
