What: International Human Rights Program’s 25th anniversary exhibition launch
Where: University of Toronto Art Centre, 15 King’s College Circle
When: Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012
Although a little tricky to find, the tucked away U of T Art Centre was eventually packed for the IHRP’s 25th Anniversary exhibition launch reception last Thursday.
The beautifully curated exhibition — entitled ‘Transformative Human Rights: 25 Years in the Field” and installed by a large team of volunteers — “is a unique and engaging way to learn about major developments in human rights law over the past 25 years and celebrates the amazing potential of law students to make the world a better place,” said IHRP director Renu Mandhane.
The IHRP event featured a keynote speech by John Ralston Saul, President of PEN International, in which he recounted the successes of a recent visit to Mexico in partnership with the IHRP. The IHRP aims to transform law students into global citizens by involving them in cutting-edge international human rights work at a pivotal point in their careers. At the same time, the students’ work helps transform human rights law around the world.
Open to the public from Feb. 10 to Feb. 23 at the U of T Art Centre, the IHRP exhibition highlights the contribution of students to developments in human rights law; it also focuses on refugee rights, gender-based violence, international criminal law and corporate accountability.
