What: The Lawyer Show — opening night afterparty
Where: Berkeley Street Theatre, 26 Berkeley St.
When: Thursday June 9, 2011
With the guidance of Nightwood Theatre staff and volunteers, this year’s courageous crew of lawyers-turned-actors spent two months rehearsing lines, dissecting text and choreographing dance sequences in order to bring an adaptation of Shakespeare’s As You Like It to life for The Lawyer Show annual fundraiser. On Thursday night, they took to the stage for a sold out and highly praised performance. Precedent was there to capture the party that followed!
“It’s been thrilling for us to watch the lawyers evolve into actors,” says Kelly Straughan, the show’s director. “They exude confidence and are natural public speakers, but the exciting challenge for them was to fully inhabit a character outside of themselves. In the rehearsal process, we treated them as we would treat any professional actor and they certainly rose to the occasion. We are really proud of their work on this production.”
In addition to celebrating the achievements of the cast, the afterparty was a chance to enjoy some live jazz music by The Cocktail Shakers, and to bid on some fantastic items and packages donated for the silent auction. Stunning bouquets of local flowers were presented to key team members, with all expressing openly the value and lasting impact of this shared experience.
