Soia & Kyo coatQuick – think of a Canadian designer whose clothes you regularly buy.

What comes to mind? Roots? Joe Fresh? Club Monaco in the Mimran era? I thought so. Sad, so sad. Ever heard of Arthur Mendonca? Pink Tartan?

Your collective Canadian fashion ignorance is why this week’s column is dedicated to highlighting two great Canadian designers that should be making their way into your closet. Buying at least one piece from one of these up-and-comers will ensure you have something in your closet that is truly unique that, for once, didn’t come from a mall. You’re a big girl now, time to spread your fashion wings!

Soïa & Kyo

This is Montreal-based brand has been making headlines lately for their beautiful and affordable coats and jackets. They also have the coolest website that even allows for online shopping! Remember, coats are investment pieces, and you should expect to spend a little more on something that is as tailored and sharp looking as these coats are. I’m particularly fond of the Jackie-O neckline coats – so cool and guaranteed to last through several fashion seasons.

Check out their website for where to buy or shop online. You should also do a Google search for the designer – there are several independent websites that carry their coats and run some great sales – try www.luxelabel.com.

Tevrow + Chase

Ok, perhaps ‘affordable’ isn’t the word we should use here. But this designer really is a great little shopping secret right here in downtown Toronto. They have a showroom both here and New York –  all the better to serve loyal clients including Gwen Stefani and Oprah. (What are the chances that the same designer appeals to both these women?!)  According to their website, their downtown office/store is the only place to buy their wares in Canada. Alternatively, shop online at www.saksfifthavenue.com.

These clothes have clean lines and city sophistication. Think Club Monaco lines and colours, but not as boring and more upscale (no surprise since the president of design used to work at Club Monaco and Mimran is involved in the brand as well).  Check out their fabulous black pants. Expect to spend $250 and up for pants or a sweater. But hey, isn’t one fabulous $275 pair of pants better than two shitty $100 pairs? Don’t gasp – this not a lot of money for a very well-made piece that you will not likely see anyone else wearing and which you will wear for years. It is time to think quality, not quantity.

If you do decide to show a little patriotism and buy from one of these designers, post a comment letting us know what you bought and what you thought.
