Tariq Remtulla — Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP
Tariq Remtulla grew up in Calgary near a curling rink, but never thought playing was an option — for him. “When I watched it on TV, I didn’t look like the curlers.” They were older and white, and he was young and of South Asian descent.
While studying law at U of T, Remtulla finally tried the sport. It was challenging and chilly, but he loved it. Four years ago, he joined a Toronto-based team formed by an old classmate. “We were a bunch of young lawyers from different backgrounds,” says Remtulla, who is on a one-year leave of absence from Blakes working as chief of staff for the mayor of the Town of Oakville. “It was kind of cool.”
To expose others to the sport, Remtulla will be helping with Capital One Rocks & Rings, a program that encourages curling among elementary school kids.
He fits in two bonspiels a year and two games a week. He never misses Friday game night. “Even if you’re going to be working on the weekend, at least take Friday night off to do something that you love.”
