When: Thursday, February 27, 2015

Since Earl Cherniak started at Lerners LLP back in 1960, he has solidified his reputation as one of the city’s top trial lawyers. A go-to lawyer for commercial litigation, he also helped build the Lerners Toronto office into the juggernaut it is today.

And last night, to recognize that career, the Toronto Lawyers Association presented Cherniak with its 2015 Award of Distinction.

“We’re not likely to see anyone like Earl in time soon,” John Lorn McDougall, long-time partner at Dentons who now works as an arbitrator, told an audience of lawyers at the Trump International Hotel. Before handing Cherniak his prize, he added, “One thing is clear: it has been and continues to be a most exceptional career.”

In accepting the award, Cherniak praised the supot he has received over the years from both his colleagues at Lerners and his wife.

“My children like to take credit for any success that I’ve achieved,” he said, grinning. ”But those that actually know me, and know what they’re talking about, rightly give that credit to my wife, Claude, without who’s love and affection I wouldn’t be standing here this evening.”

The Toronto Lawyers Association also handed out its annual Honsberger Award to Jeffrey Lem, a lawyer at the Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, for his strong record of mentorship over his 25-year career.
