They may have been bowling on April Fools Day, but the $140,000 raised last Sunday for the Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program is no joke.
The Toronto Lawyers Association and Teplitsky Colson LLP hosted the fourth Law Firm Bowling Challenge. Law firms, organizations, and individuals could support the bi-annual event by sponsoring a lane or by striking a team. This year’s bowling challenge had over 30 law firms sponsoring and/or participating, and all 48 lanes were filled thanks to the participation of other groups such as Lexis Nexis, LawPro and Soberman Chartered Accountants.
The Lawyers Feed the Hungry program delivers 9,000 meals each month, year round. The program, which costs $500,000 a year to run, has become a vital component of Toronto’s social network, assisting our city’s most vulnerable. Ninety per cent of every dollar raised goes toward the purchase of food and supplies for the program.
The Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Law Firm Bowling Challenge 2012 was a “tremendous success,” said Joseph A. Neuberger, co-chair of both the event and the fundraising committee for the Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program. “We began the campaign in September of 2011 with a goal of raising $125,000 and with the strong support of Toronto lawyers, we have surpassed $140,000 in funds collected.”
“(The bowling) event remains an important component of the overall fundraising efforts of the program because it brings Toronto lawyers together in the spirit of charity, fun and renewal of our sense of community and commitment to helping this city’s most vulnerable.”
