Birthday

It’s Precedent’s birthday!

It was on October 19, 2007 that the legal community was introduced to the first law and lifestyle magazine for Ontario lawyers. Five years ago today, the first issue of Precedent Magazine landed on 20,000 desks. Happy birthday to us!

I don’t want to get too sentimental, but thought I’d share a few highlights from that first issue:

  • You swooned then, and you’ll swoon again, over the handsome men in our fashion spread who modelled shirts and ties for fall. Thanks to Brad Moore, Scot Patriquin, Usman M. Sheikh, Ben Alarie, Joseph Cheng, Adam Rambert and Charles Finlay for agreeing to be photographed for a magazine they’d never seen or heard of at the time.
  • We got an awesome picture of employment lawyer, Matthew Dewar, with a kazoo in his mouth — one of the key instruments in his ‘80s coverband, B.A. Baracus (how else would you do all the horns?).
  • And, of course, there was our cover story, “Recession Proof: How smart associates are planning for a market downturn”. We totally called that recession. Lawyers featured in that story were Karen Park, Mario Nigro and Amrit Sidhu.

Thanks so much to everyone who’s contributed to our success. From our contributors and readers to our advertisers, sponsors, suppliers and advisors. These first five years have been amazing. And there will be plenty more Precedent where that came from in the years ahead.

Turn the clocks back five years and follow (a very enthusiastic) Melissa Kluger as she tours the print shop and watches the very first issue of Precedent roll off the press:
