Dear loyal readers of lawandstyle.ca,

It’s been over a year since I typed my first entry and launched this blog. Over that time I become increasingly plugged in to our legal community, and have also gotten to know you, my readers. I know that you love the Wednesday roundup of legal news and that you look forward to Friday’s dose of style and scathing criticism that comes with the Fashionista. I’ve watched our numbers grow to over 10,000 readers a week.

Things are good. But they’re about to get even better.

I am very pleased to announce that on October 19 we will be launching a print edition of Precedent: The new rules of law and style. Ontario’s first independent legal magazine for young lawyers. We’re shifting away from traditional trade-style law magazines — Precedent mixes law and lifestyle to create a publication that I hope you will read both for business and for pleasure.

To give you just a taste, our first issue includes:

  • Legal news and gossip (like which Bay Street firms handed out interim bonuses this year — and why)
  • Profiles and feature stories on people and issues shaping our profession
  • Fashion and style (like a glimpse into the home of a Toronto entertainment lawyer and a very sexy fashion story with lawyers as our models).
  • The Fashionista and a new columnist (who will also be joining us online)

I’m thrilled with the results of over a year of planning and development. We’ve worked with some of Canada’s best writers, photographers, designers, and illustrators to produce a magazine that is, well, unprecedented in Canadian legal publishing. I can’t wait to share it with you.

So how can you get it? We’ve made it easy. If you are a lawyer in Toronto, you can expect Precedent to land on your desk on or about October 19. For all other lawyers practicing in Ontario, you’re eligible for a free subscription. For other Precedent fans, you will be able to buy a reasonably priced subscription. Details on how to subscribe will be posted here shortly.

When the magazine launches we’ll also be launching a brand new website. Don’t worry, we’ll still run your favourite features, with regular posts and our online columnists, but it will be rolled into a more comprehensive magazine website. Content from the magazine will be available free online, with lots of additional web exclusives.

Thank you again to everyone for your interest and support of this site. We’re looking forward to sharing the magazine with you and look forward to your comments, suggestions and story ideas.

Best wishes,

Melissa Kluger
