Dressing (fabulously) for the weather

How to stay toasty and trendy all winter long
How to stay toasty and trendy all winter long

I don’t know about you, but I am in the mood for winter. It may be strange to look forward to snow and plunging temperatures, but there you have it. It might have something to do with the delicious coats I like to stockpile (a running joke in our household). But whether or not you’re a fellow winter lover, trust me: you lady lawyers can work the elements to your sartorial advantage.

First, pay your respects to our Russian comrades and choose a touch of fur (faux, obviously). The safest bet is fur accessories, which are practical and adventurous. Fur is huge right now, and you can find a variety of super luxe hats, scarves, snoods and earmuffs at most of the big retailers. I love this taupe infinity scarf (from Indigo of all places), and Banana Republic has a great Cossack-inspired fur hat. Check out these adorable earmuffs from Forever 21 or RW & Co.’s faux fur-trimmed scarf and mittens. Just promise me you won’t wear day-glo coloured fur (unless you’re a raver) or tote a fur bag (unless you’re Kim Kardashian).

Next, indulge your inner ski bunny and wear a sweater to work. I don’t mean your basic cardigan, but a real sweater – something your grandmother would approve of. Visit Massimo Dutti, Zara and J. Crew and try a classic crewneck, v-neck or cable-knit sweater in a solid colour (I like navy or caramel), or even try a muted print or pattern if you think your dress code will allow for it. Make sure the sweater is a thin knit and form-fitting.  Most will go nicely over a collared silk blouse or traditional button down – just add an A-line or pencil skirt and heels for a surprisingly professional look. Switch out the skirt for a pair of skinny cropped pants and flats for another classic outfit, or pair with jeans and booties for casual Friday. Avoid oversize or loud sweaters; despite my ski bunny nod above, you’re going to work, not the Alps.

Invest in a fresh set of winter accessories to perk up your look (especially if you’re a black peacoat wearer). Not feeling fur? Try a bit of colour or embellishment. I love this adorable “pearlized gem” hat from Loft, and this sequined knit hat from Express. Shop Bop also has a great selection of brightly coloured cold-weather accessories. If you’ve got the budget for it, Marc Jacobs’ winter pieces are especially flamboyant this season. And if you’re more of a classic girl, you can’t go wrong with a chic striped eternity scarf from Dynamite or these fabulous leather gloves from Club Monaco. Your extremities will thank you!

Finally, once you’re all suited up for the cold, stock your bag with a few winter essentials: Neutrogena Hand Cream (THE best hand cream ever made, hands down); Maybelline Dream Mousse cream blush and, of course, extra-strength classic chapstick. You’re welcome! Now, I’m off to drink a Starbucks peppermint mocha and maybe do a little browsing for a new parka. Like I said, I kinda have a coat problem.
