A new organization aimed at providing support for women entering the legal profession will host its inaugural event next week.
Young Women in Law was founded by ten female lawyers in response to the fact that “cultures and practices that pervade the legal profession have not always kept pace with the changes in gender representation.” The founders’ motivation for starting YWL — which is sponsored by Faskens and has on its board lawyers in private practice, in-house counsel and with the Crown — is based upon their own experiences as they launched their careers.
“When we entered the legal community as articling students, we began to investigate membership opportunities with organizations dedicated to the promotion of young female professionals. More specifically, we were interested in joining an organization geared towards young women in law, as we were concerned about the issues faced by women new to the profession, and in particular, the poor retention of female lawyers in private practice.”
The launch runs from 6pm to 9pm on Tuesday, November 16 at Brassaii (461 King St W), and is sponsored by McCarthys. It includes wine and hors d’oeuvres, a suit donation drive and silent auction in support of The Redwood Women’s Shelter, and a keynote address by Globe and Mail VP and General Counsel Sue Gaudi.
