Macleod Dixon and Norton Rose OR officially merged Jan. 1, forming the third largest firm in Canada.

The firm — which will be known as Norton Rose Canada — specializes in energy and mining law. Norton Rose Canada has more than 700 lawyers based in Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Quebec, as well as in Caracas and Bogota — the only major Canadian legal practice with offices in Latin America.

The enlarged Norton Rose Group is one of the five largest international legal practices, with more than 2,900 lawyers in 43 offices throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Central Asia.

“The merger adds depth to Norton Rose Canada’s resources across its six key industry sectors: financial institutions; energy; infrastructure, mining and commodities; transport; technology and innovation; and pharmaceuticals and life sciences,” the firm said in a news release. “In particular, Norton Rose Canada’s energy and infrastructure, mining and commodities sectors have been greatly strengthened.”

John Coleman will continue as managing partner of Norton Rose Canada. Bill Tuer, managing partner of Macleod Dixon, will join the executive committee of Norton Rose Canada.

“We’ve expanded globally for 20 years and creating Norton Rose Canada was a client-driven decision,” Tuer said in the release. “This isn’t our first international rodeo, but it’s our biggest.”
