An editorial in today’s Toronto Star criticizes Ontario Chief Justice Warren Winkler for not upholding the tradition set by his predecessor of holding news conferences during the court’s ceremonial openings at Osgoode Hall.
Winkler cancelled former Chief Justice Roy McMurtry’s news conferences last year, thereby eliminating what the Star described as “a refreshing departure from the customary remoteness of senior judges.” The editorial continues:
“…McMurtry added transparency, accountability and credibility to his position by shedding light on the workings of this very important branch of government. As Ontario’s courts strive to keep up with the times, the cancellation of the annual news conference is a step backwards.”
