…OC, in this case, referring to the Order of Canada, and not the T.V. show of the same name. On Canada Day, 75 Canadians were named as the next batch of Companions, Officers, and Members of the Order of Canada, and as always the legal profession was represented, although only four honorees out of 75 are being recognized specifically for contributions to the law. Here they are:
- The Hon. John C. Major, formerly of Bennett Jones’ Calgary office and later a supreme court justice, was made a Companion;
- Joan Clark of Ogilvy Renault was made an Officer for her work on laws related to animal cruelty;
- Constance Backhouse, a Law Society bencher and research chair at the University of Ottawa’s law faculty, was made a member for her research and teaching;
- H. Wade MacLauchlan, formerly Dean of Law at the University of New Brunswick and now President of the University of P.E.I., was made a member.
