CBC News reported last night that Ottawa is preparing to go to the Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn the recent Federal Court of Appeal decision in Khadr’s case. Earlier this month, the latter court upheld a previous ruling which stipulated that the government must see to it that Khadr be returned to Canada as soon as possible. The Court of Appeal ruled that Canadian officials breached Khadr’s right to life, liberty and security of person when they questioned him at Guantanamo Bay and then reported their findings to the Americans.

The government continues to insist that Khadr be tried by the U.S., due to the the severity of charges against him. (Khadr is charged with murder, conspiracy and support of terrorism, and is accused of throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. soldier.)

Edney has long been a leader in the effort to repatriate Khadr.
