What: Barbra Schlifer Clinic 19th Annual Tribute
Where: Daniels Spectrum Building, Regent Park – 585 Dundas St. E.
When: June 13th, 2013
Despite the torrential rain, the large event space at the Daniels Spectrum building was barely enough to contain this tremendous fundraiser, packed as it was with guests, auction items, food and drink. Sponsored by Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, the event was hosted by journalist and Osgoode Hall Law School grad, Paula Todd.
“This event is critical in raising the funds to sustain the clinic’s vital services to over 5,000 women each year,” said Amanda Dale, executive director of the clinic. “We were thrilled to present Leilani Farha with the first ever Spirit of Barbra Schlifer Award to acknowledge that we are never in this work alone, and that Barbra Schlifer’s name lives on in many. The event surpassed all our expectations, and we were just shy of our new ambitious fundraising goal. Thanks to all who made it a successful event.”
The Spirit of Barbra Schlifer Award was sponsored by Torys LLP. Its inaugural winner, Leilani Farha, executive director of Canada Without Poverty, is a champion of women’s rights.
Named in tribute to Barbra Schlifer, the promising lawyer that was murdered on the day she was called to the Bar over 30 years ago, the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic offers legal help, professional counselling and language interpretation to women who have experienced violence.
