What: The Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History Book Launch
Where: Osgoode Hall, Toronto
When: Monday, December 3, 2018
On the evening of Monday, December 3, members of The Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History and guests gathered in the beautiful convocation room at Osgoode Hall to celebrate the launch of two new books: A History of Law in Canada Volume 1: Beginnings to 1866 and The Class Actions Controversy: The Origins and Development of the Ontario Class Proceedings Act.
Standing at the podium, Justice Robert Sharpe, the president of the Osgoode Society addressed the crowd as they snacked on hors d’oeuvres and sipped on wine.
“A History of Law is a superb book,” he said. “It weaves together, in a highly readable format, the three strains of our Canadian legal heritage: Indigenous law, common law and civil law.” The book was authored by Jim Phillips, a law professor at University of Toronto, Philip Girard, a professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and R. Blake Brown, an associate history professor at St. Mary’s University.
The second book was written by Suzanne Chiodo, doctoral candidate in law at Oxford University and former class-actions lawyer at Rochon Genova LLP in Toronto. “Her book is important,” said Sharpe. “It presents a historical study of class actions in Ontario.”
Phillips, Girard and Chiodo then took the stage to thank their families and colleagues for their support and encouragement during the book-writing process. Afterwards, the authors signed copies of their books for guests to take home.
