The summer 2011 issue of Precedent is full of profilies of standout lawyers, including the six winners of the 2011 Precedent Setter Awards and the subjects of the latest iterations of our regular Best Practices and Secret Life departments.
Best Practices: Estée Garfin, legal counsel for the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, began her career on Bay Street, but left in search of a better work-life balance. Though working for CAS has its own challenges, Garfin told writer Ryan Starr in an interview for Precedent that she’s found a way to keep herself centred: “Ultimately the focus has to be on what’s in the best interest of that child and protecting him or her from harm….If you’re able to look at it that way, it helps you keep focused on what needs to be done.”

Secret Life: Blaney McMurtry partner Dan Giantsopoulos’s turning point came after watching his son Angelo’s baseball team lose 18 of 19 games in the season. A competitive player in his youth, Dan volunteered to coach the Triple-A team, Richmond Hill Phoenix.
