How will the Province prosecute the former head of its justice system?
Of the many questions surrounding Monday’s tragedy on Bloor Street and the subsequent arrest of Michael Bryant, this is perhaps the biggest and most interesting legal quagmire. The first step the Office of the Attorney General took was the not surprising decision to bring in an out-of-province lawyer to handle the prosecution.
That lawyer is none other than Richard Peck, the man who successfully defended Ajaib Singh Bagri against murder charges in the Air India bombing, and who took R. v. Sharpe all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. A recent bio of Peck describes him as a calm and measured intellectual, known more for his love of language than for courtroom dramatics.
It is not yet known who Bryant will choose to represent him (despite some misinformed media reports). But it will be quite an honour to be the laywer that the former AG calls upon. Here’s Precedent’s list of likely candidates. Who do you think will get the job?

- Brian Greenspan

- Marie Henien
