Lawyerly Love: Nicole Rumble & Aleksandar Jovanovic

On a Friday evening last September, Nicole Rumble and Aleksandar Jovanovic were on their way to dinner when their cab broke down at St. James Park. As they got out to hail another taxi, Aleks spotted a friend taking photos in the park. After saying hello, the friend insisted, “Let me take a picture of you two.” That was Aleks’s cue. The friend hit record on his camera and Aleks got down on one knee. Of course, Aleks planned the whole thing. (He paid the cabbie to fake the malfunction, and that “friend” was a hired hand.) “When we look at the video, I don’t even remember it happening,” says Nicole. “It was a bit of a whirlwind.”

Aleks and Nicole met six years ago in law school at Queen’s University. They were in the same small section, and had every class together. “I thought Nicole was funny, smart and pretty,” says Aleks. Nicole’s first impression was more critical. “Aleks had a very unique fashion style back then,” she jokes of his graphic Ed Hardy T-shirts. “It was a bit Jersey Shoreesque.” But his warm personality and loud laugh charmed her. They became fast friends.

“We clicked because we’re both sarcastic and like to poke fun at each other,” says Aleks, who, in second year, mustered up the courage to ask Nicole on a date. From then on, they were a couple.

After law school, they both got plum jobs in downtown Toronto. Aleks went to Torkin Manes and Nicole landed at McCarthys. The couple now lives together in an east-end loft. The pair talks on the phone every workday. And with their wedding coming up — it’s set for August at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club — there’s plenty to discuss. “Unfortunately for Aleks,” says Nicole, “now that we’re planning the wedding, there’s been a lot of communication about that.”

Lawyerly Love: Geoffrey Hunnisett & Brandon Kerstens

After Osler associate Geoffrey Hunnisett finished speaking at the 2012 Out on Bay Street conference, he went over to the bar. That’s when Brandon Kerstens, a second-year law student, approached him to say hello. “Geoff brushed me aside,” he recalls. But Brandon wasn’t thinking of romance. “I saw him as a useful connection,” he says with a laugh.

Around that time, Brandon was going through OCIs. He landed an interview at Osler — and Geoffrey was on the team that interviewed him. “Geoff made me an offer on behalf of the firm,” says Brandon. “This time I turned him down.” Instead, Brandon went to Heenan Blaikie.

When Brandon started his summer job, in 2013, Heenan was 10 months away from its stunning collapse. Brandon saw partners fleeing to other firms. “It didn’t seem like a place I could grow,” he says. He got in touch with Osler and asked if he could article there the next year. The firm interviewed him again, and agreed. So at least one good thing came out of Heenan’s downfall: Brandon would be reunited with Geoffrey.

Near the end of Brandon’s articling term, Geoffrey took him for coffee. “It’s common to check in with new hires,” says Geoffrey. “It was purely business.” Once Brandon finished articling, they got dinner at SpeakEasy 21. “We flipped into dating mode pretty quickly,” says Geoffrey.

Dating a colleague has its advantages. Last year, when Geoffrey finished a lengthy arbitration, Brandon left a bottle of champagne on his desk.

They moved in together a few months after they started dating. It didn’t take long for the “L” word to drop. “We looked at each other,” says Brandon, “and said, ‘There’s no way we should be able to say it this early, but we absolutely, undoubtedly do.’”

Lawyerly Love: Elisabeth Patrick & Ian Mitchell

When Ian Mitchell and Elisabeth Patrick started dating in 2007, no one was surprised to see the two WeirFoulds lawyers get together. “When I told a coworker,” Ian recalls, “he said, ‘It’s good you two figured it out. We thought we were going to have to tell you.’” The couple was also carrying on a proud firm tradition. “Back then,” says Elisabeth, “there were a lot of inter-firm relationships.”

The pair had worked together at WeirFoulds since 2004, when Ian was a first-year associate and Elisabeth was an articling student. Over the span of three years, they became great friends. Ian developed a crush and wanted to ask Elisabeth out. But, he points out, “She had to get rid of her boyfriend first.”

In 2007, she did. Their first date was at the ROM. “From the beginning, Ian’s been the first person I’ve wanted to tell everything to,” says Elisabeth.

“Whether it’s exciting or terrible news.” Two years after that first date, they got married.

Elisabeth now works in-house at TD Bank, but the two still work in the same building. That has its perks. They drive to work together almost every morning. “It’s also great for days when I forget my keys or there’s things to pick up,” says Elisabeth. “It’s perfect for household management.”

These days, they’re busy parents of a two-year-old son, Luke. “Back when we were associates, it was normal for both of us to work until 9 at night,” says Ian. “Now, one of us has to leave the office by 6 to pick up Luke from daycare.” It’s a good thing daycare is just across the street from their office building.

So who declared “I love you” first? “I don’t know the answer,” says Ian. “That’s terrible. I think having a child erases part of your memory.”
