Women’s Law Association of Ontario next Tuesday (Jan. 17) holds a seminar for lawyers looking to start their own law firms.

Led by Irv Handler, a small business and professional banking specialist with Scotiabank, the event will feature a panel of WLAO members and guests who have started their own firms, either as a solo or with others. Panel members will be Cheryl Goldhart (Goldhart Law), Michelle L. Wassenaar (Johnston Wassenaar LLP) and Laura Zizzo (Zizzo Allan Climate Law LLP).

The seminar — ‘Hanging out Your Shingle: How to Start your Own Law Firm‘ — will focus on what resources and support systems are available for lawyers starting a new venture, and what role WLAO can play in helping.

The event will be at the Ontario Bar Association Conference Centre (20 Toronto Street) from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Preliminary approval has been given for both 2.5 Professionalism Hours and 2.5 New Member CPD Hours.

A second program in this series will be running on Feb. 21, focused on strategic business development.

To register, visit the WLAO site. For more information contact wlao@cogeco.ca or call 416-410-7267.

Update (Jan. 18): The Jan. 17 program with Irv Handler has been postponed to Feb 21; the two parts will now be presented as one program. There will also be a program April 16 on practice management; this will include the proposed panel from the Jan. 17 program.
