About Precedent

Precedent is an independent, award-winning Toronto-based magazine for young lawyers. In a shift away from traditional trade magazines, Precedent speaks to lawyers both in and out of the office. At the same time that we focus on the latest issues in the profession, we also look at the lifestyle of being a lawyer. The quarterly print magazine is sent to over 15,000 lawyers and law students in Ontario and the annual Student Issue is distributed at law schools across the country. Precedent also operates a website at The site is updated daily with news, columns and events of particular interest to our young lawyer audience.

Law and Style Media Inc. also operates the Precedent A-List ( – a website for career announcements and job opportunities exclusively for lawyers.

 Marketing and Events Coordinator

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is interested in event planning, marketing, social media and communications.

If you want to help an ambitious, independent magazine take its success to the next level, this exciting and fast-paced job is for you.



  • Manage scheduling and posting of all online advertising
  • Use Google Analytics to provide regular internal stats on websites
  • Prepare reports for clients regarding online traffic
  • Work with publisher and associate editor to post all social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)
  • Draft and send all company eNewsletters
  • Maintain database of eNewsletter subscribers
  • Work with partners to develop suitable contests for website and eNewsletters
  • Act as point person for client inquires regarding technical issues on company websites
  • Maintain list of events in legal community that Precedent has been asked to cover. Work with publisher and associate editor to decide which events to cover and then assign photographer
  • Work with publisher on development of new online initiatives


  • Plan and execute all of company’s events, including six to ten student parties at law schools across Canada, Precedent holiday party and Precedent Setter Awards
  • Work with publisher to explore additional event opportunities


  • Attend some sales meetings with publisher.  After meetings, prepare draft proposals and provide additional information to clients
  • Prepare insertion orders
  • Manage submissions of advertising artwork
  • Develop house ads for insertion in Precedent
  • Assist publisher in getting meetings with potential advertisers


  • Monitor industry associations, websites, press releases and Twitter for relevant news and ideas
  • Research potential advertising opportunities/new clients
  • Write correspondence, reports, proposals, presentations
  • Research possible grant opportunities


  • Work with publisher to design and execute subscription campaigns
  • Assist in the ongoing development and upkeep of the Precedent database
  • Respond to subscription inquiries by phone and email
  • Create mailing list in advance of each issue
  • Work with publisher to develop and implement subscription strategy
  • Prepare reports for publisher to review status of subscription campaigns and subscriber database

Note: Precedent is an all-hands-on-deck environment. Other tasks will arise from time to time that may fall outside this job description.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience writing for the web, including blogging, basic HTML
  • Familiarity with basic website content management systems (WordPress)
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn)
  • Experience planning and executing events
  • Superior communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to be self-directed and self-motivated
  • Ability to work quickly, on tight deadlines
  • Friendly, outgoing personality

Other skills and qualifications that would be helpful but not mandatory:

  • Photography experience
  • Experience working in a magazine environment
  • Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint, Campaign Monitor, Keynote, Google Analytics
  • Knowledge of the legal profession
  • Driver’s license
