Why you need to shop at Hangar9

The backstory: When Audrey Ramsay walks into Hangar9, the bubbly saleswoman already knows her name — and her dress size. That’s because Ramsay, an insurance defence lawyer at Blouin Dunn LLP, is a long-time customer of the store, located in the PATH, which sells women’s designer clothing and jewellery.

The store carries more than 90 big-name designers, from Rag & Bone (Ramsay’s favourite) to Alexander Wang and Stuart Weitzman. “But what’s unique about Hangar9 isn’t the labels,” says Ramsay. “It’s the service.”

By that she means the free in-store personal-shopping appointments. The team at Hangar9 is big on mixing and matching, and has a knack for showing customers how to make multiple outfits out of a small number of pieces. “I thought I knew how to dress,” says Ramsay. “But Hangar9 turned that notion on its head. The salespeople are incredible at helping me find new looks.”

Hangar9’s real claim to fame, though, is its “closet editing.” Sign up for this service and a salesperson comes to your home and helps you decide which items in your closet are worth keeping, need altering or should be donated. “I mean, who else does that?”

Where to find it: On the ground level of First Canadian Place, beside the Indigospirit.

How much you’ll pay: A necklace might cost $300. A dress? $1,000. Closet editing costs $250 for an hour and a half.

Did you know? During a closet edit, the salesperson will take a series of photos of the customer wearing a range of outfits. Then she compiles those photos in a complimentary “style journal” — so you’ll never forget your best looks.
