Photo by Keith AllisonThe perjury trial of former baseball star Roger Clemens ended abruptly earlier today when a mistrial was declared by U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton.

Judge Walton ruled that statements in a prosecution video about a deposition by Laura Pettitte, wife of Clemens’ former teammate, Andy Pettitte, were inadmissable and should have been edited out. The judge had previously ruled against prosecutors using Laura Pettitte’s testimony unless brought up on rebuttal.

The charges against Clemens stem from allegations that he lied to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in 2008 about his use of steroids and human growth hormone.

A hearing has been called for September 2 to determine whether the high-profile case will be retried.
