Precedent is an award-winning, independent magazine for Toronto lawyers owned by Law and Style Media Inc. In a shift away from traditional trade magazines, Precedent speaks to lawyers both in and out of the office. We publish online at PrecedentMagazine.com and our quarterly print magazine is sent free to over 15,000 lawyers. We also publish PrecedentJD – a magazine for Canadian law students, which is available online at PrecedentJD.com and also distributed in print to students across the country. Law and Style Media Inc. also operates an innovative website for career announcements and job opportunities exclusively for lawyers called The Precedent A-List.

Marketing Coordinator

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is interested in marketing and communications to support growth at an innovative, independent media company. Our collegial and fast-paced environment will provide you with lots of opportunities to learn new things and grow your skills.

Responsibilities

Digital
As the marketing coordinator, you will be responsible for supporting all three of our digital properties. Digital responsibilities will include using WordPress to publish our print magazine content online, drafting and scheduling social media posts to promote our online content, providing website stats for both internal use and client reports, preparing all company eNewsletters, and managing customer accounts and inquiries on the Precedent A-List website.

Advertising
Print and digital advertising is the lifeblood of our publishing company. We will rely on the marketing coordinator’s excellent communication skills and attention to detail to collect both print and digital ad artwork from our clients and to maintain ongoing positive client relationships. You will also have the opportunity to work with our marketing manager to develop our own print and digital ads.

Magazine
The marketing coordinator will assist our senior editor with editorial tasks as they arise such as inputting changes into InDesign files, arranging photo shoots, collecting letters to the editor, identifying lawyers in event photos, and reaching out to firm contacts to collect data for our annual Summer Job Watch and Hireback Watch.

Circulation
The marketing coordinator will assist in the ongoing development and upkeep of the Precedent subscriber database – both for print and eNewsletter subscriptions. You will respond to address update inquires and update our lists accordingly. You will assist the marketing manager with putting together our quarterly mailing list and other distribution-related projects. The marketing coordinator will also maintain relationships with law school and law firm contacts who help with the distribution of our student publication.

Events
Law and Style Media Inc. holds its own annual event, with the possibility of adding more events in the future. As well, we are invited to attend and cover many events in the legal community. As marketing coordinator, you will assist in the planning and execution of our annual Precedent Setter Awards event. For external events, your job will be to maintain a list of invitations, decide what we will cover and assign staff to attend. Sometimes you will be the one to attend (lawyer parties are fun!). You will also work with the marketing manager to explore additional company event opportunities.

Office
The marketing coordinator will assist with general office tasks such as answering the phone and arranging for couriers. It will also be your job to help organize office fun – such as team outings and holiday events.

Note: Precedent is an all-hands-on-deck environment. Other tasks will arise from time to time that may fall outside this job description.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with WordPress and basic HTML
  • Experience writing for social media
  • Superior communication skills and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to be self-directed and self-motivated
  • Ability to work quickly, on tight deadlines
  • Positive attitude towards a wide variety of projects and tasks
  • 2+ years working in an office environment

Other skills and qualifications that would be helpful but not mandatory:

  • Photography experience
  • Experience working in a magazine environment
  • Familiarity with Campaign Monitor, Google Analytics
  • Knowledge of the legal profession
  • Driver’s license

Location

  • The Precedent office is located in downtown Toronto near Front and Parliament
