Precedent is an award-winning, independent magazine for Toronto lawyers owned by Law and Style Media Inc. In a shift away from traditional trade magazines, Precedent speaks to lawyers both in and out of the office. We like to push the envelope on important issues, while also looking at the lifestyle of being a lawyer. We publish online at and our quarterly print magazine is sent free to over 15,000 lawyers. We also publish PrecedentJD – a magazine for Canadian law students, which is available online at and also distributed in print to students across the country. Law and Style Media Inc. also operates an innovative website for career announcement and job opportunities exclusively for lawyers called The Precedent A-List.

Precedent’s high-quality design and editorial content has been recognized with gold and silver medals at the Canadian Business Media Awards. Precedent has also won gold at the National Magazine Awards.

Editorial Assistant

This is an exciting opportunity for a new journalist to hit the ground running and learn all aspects of magazine publishing. We are looking for someone who is organized, detail-oriented, with strong communication skills to join our team.



  • Write and edit content for our magazines
  • Attend weekly editorial meetings
  • Work with editorial team to plan and develop editorial calendar
  • Some fact checking and proofreading
  • Assist in the development and creation of sponsor content
  • Maintain list of events in legal community that Precedent has been asked to cover. Work with editorial team to decide which events to cover and then assign photographer


  • Oversee magazine’s production schedule – keeping track of the status of all stories
  • Work with design firm to ensure files are passed back and forth efficiently
  • Coordinate scheduling of photo shoots, attend some shoots
  • Manage submissions of advertising artwork
  • Use InDesign to enter changes arising out of fact-checking and proofing
  • Use WordPress to publish magazine online
  • Attend press checks
  • Assist with maintenance of subscriber database


  • Manage scheduling and posting of all online advertising
  • Work with senior editor and marketing manager to post all social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram)
  • Draft and send all company eNewsletters
  • Act as point person for client inquires regarding technical issues on the Precedent A-List

Note: Precedent is an all-hands-on deck environment. Other tasks will arise from time to time that may fall outside this job description.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Writing and editing experience
  • Superior communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Self-motivated, reliable and diligent
  • Familiarity with CP style
  • Familiarity with basic HTML and WordPress
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn, Instagram)
  • Familiarity with basic InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator

Other skills and qualifications that would be helpful but not mandatory:

  • Experience working in a magazine environment
  • Familiarity with Campaign Monitor, Google Analytics
  • Photography experience
  • Knowledge of the legal profession
  • Driver’s license
