The Century Room, usually a hopping King St. nightclub, was transformed last week into an elegant event space for the 3rd Annual Young Women in Law Charity Gala. This evening of networking in support of a worthy cause drew quite the crowd, many of whom were no doubt as excited as Precedent to hear Amanda Lang’s keynote speech. In addition to the fabulous swag bags presented to each guest, Lang — co-host of The Lang & O’Leary Exchange on CBC Television and the senior business correspondent for CBC News — gifted signed copies of her new book to those in attendance.

Young Women in Law (YWL) is a not-for-profit organization for women lawyers in their early stages of practice. According to YWL President Jessica Catton, “YWL’s overarching mission is to support and promote young female lawyers. We aim to do this by providing networking opportunities as well as fun events and programs to meet the unique needs of young women lawyers, and to help women give back to their communities. The charity gala is a big event for us because it does all of these things at once.”

With close to 300 people in attendance, the evening’s ticket sales and silent auction raised approximately $20,000, all of which will go towards Lang’s chosen charity, the Writer’s Trust of Canada. In addition to event presenters, The Marsden Group, other generous sponsors included Fasken Martineau LLP, McCarthy Tétrault LLP, Bennett Jones LLP, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and TransPerfect.

Stephanie King, YWL’s Director of Events, was thrilled with the event’s success and the keynote presentation. “Amanda Lang is a smart, successful woman and a wonderful role model for any young woman starting her career. Her keynote address encouraged everyone in attendance at the gala to be innovative and creative on a daily basis and to constantly ask questions and challenge norms. It was great to hear Amanda speak, and to support writers and authors by fundraising for the Writer’s Trust of Canada.”
