An unsung hero, who works in the trenches of the battle for access to justice, says she had “a little pizzazz” added to her career last week.

That hero is Julie Mathews, the executive director of Community Legal Education Ontario, the province’s top public legal information and education organization. And, last week, more than 120 people came together to honour her as the winner of The Law Foundation of Ontario’s 2015 Guthrie Award.

Highly respected in the non-profit and justice sector, Mathews has spent her career helping everyday people, especially those from marginalized communities, get the legal help they need.

Paul Schabas, a partner at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, presented Mathews with the Guthrie Award medal.

Established in 1996, the award acknowledges outstanding individuals and organizations for their contributions to access to justice and excellence in the legal profession.
